Cobham Sports 5-0 Sherborne Town Reserves
The Young Zebras travelled to high-flying Cobham Sports on the back of an impressive midweek victory over Balti Sports, hoping to build on that momentum.
Sherborne started brightly and, although we didn’t create too much going forward, we looked comfortable for the opening 20 minutes and never really looked in trouble.
Unfortunately, things took a turn shortly after. Cobham scored directly from a corner, with Sammy Hulland unlikely to be happy with his part in the goal as the ball found its way into the net.
Minutes later, another costly mistake saw the ball played straight to a Cobham player around 35 yards out. He had the audacity to chip the keeper, producing a brilliant finish that, through gritted teeth, you can only applaud.
Two goals conceded through our own undoing. Against a side of Cobham’s quality, the task was already difficult enough without gifting them opportunities.
Cobham added a third and fourth right on the stroke of half-time. In truth, the 4-0 scoreline didn’t reflect the balance of the opening period, but if you gift chances to a good side, you will be punished.
Two changes were made at the break, and the response was encouraging. The game became more settled and, although we struggled to create much going forward, the lads dug deep, worked incredibly hard and showed real determination.
Cobham, playing with confidence, continued to push but found chances harder to come by, although they did manage to add a fifth before the final whistle.
One of the biggest positives was seeing the young players step up. To play the entire second half with a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old at centre-back, alongside 17-year-olds at both full-back positions, says a lot about the talent we have coming through.
We’re disappointed with the first-half performance and the mistakes that ultimately cost us, but the second half gave us plenty of positives to take forward and build on.
Cobham deserved the win. We gave them far too many opportunities and made it incredibly difficult for ourselves to find a way back into the game.
Best of luck to Cobham Sports for the remainder of the season.
