Callum Gundry - impressive debut

Match Report

A young Sherborne Town Reserves team showed determination and character in equal measure to earn a point against Holt United.

The Raleigh Grove hosts dug deep to weather a second half storm from Wayne Jerome’s outfit despite opening the scoring.

Their task was made that much more difficult when Sam Bowers was sent off for two bookable offences close to the hour mark.

Sherborne manager Jason Lock handed a debut to Callum Gundry, while fellow under-18s Jack Burnett started in defence and Dave Atkinson on the bench.

Lock said: “We were under the cosh for 35 minutes in the second half and on a different day Holt could have won 4-1, but the resolve and determination of everyone kept it at 1-1.

“If we can show that determination and resilience for the rest of the season we will improve no end.

“We needed to show that against Hamworthy Rec and then we would have got something out of that.

“But because we were so determined we were going to get something, we got something.”

Sherborne took the lead midway through the first half when Nick Jacobs ran on to a through-ball and shot diagonally across goal, past the keeper.

However, it took just five minutes for Holt to level when Sherborne were caught on the break and punished by a near-identical finish to the game’s opener.

An injury to Lee Clark saw James Thompson’s introduction after 30 minutes as the utility player continued his return to fitness.

Jordan Butler picked up a knock soon after the interval, forcing Chris Cowley to right back and replacement Atkinson into midfield.

Bowers’ dismissal resulted in another formation shuffle from Lock. Cowley returned to midfield as Thompson played a sweeper role between Jason Bond and Matt Rackham.

Lock said: “This is one thing I like about our players – we are very versatile. Everyone dug in and filled in spaces where they have not really played.

“Jason and Matt were excellent at the back and Ashley Knibbs made some fantastic saves. Callum took his chance in the team.

“It was not the ideal first game for him but in the second half he did everything simple. Callum was thrown into a hornets’ nest and coped with it admirably.

“Dave Atkinson’s pace really did cause Holt trouble when he was on the left and with a bit more experience he could have scored.

“It is good to have Matt Rackham back after a long time away through work commitments and injury.

“Phil Ormrod was absolutely tireless up front again. He his nowhere near match fitness but he just keeps on going.

“It proves how much work we did because they were exhausted in the changing room afterwards and could barely say a word. We want that every week.”
